Trio Kenwood KD-1033 turntable main bearing service

One of my first posts in this blog was regarding the servicing of the Pioneer PL12D turntable, and that has proven to be the most popular by a significant margin. The Pioneer PL12D had its competitors, and probably the most popular alternative was the Trio Kenwood KD-1033 turntable. I use both names (Trio and Kenwood) as the company operated under different names in different markets. In the UK they were Trio, possibly because the brand Kenwood was most famous here for food blenders. 95% of a KD-1033 is similar to  Pioneer PL12D, and servicing them is very much the same process. Both are belt drive , have an AC synchronous motor,  mechanical speed change , a main bearing, sprung top deck and rubber motor mounts. the KD-1033 uses a different type of anti skate mechanism, employing a thread and weight. The plinth is shallower with an internal cross brace. One aspect that is different is the design of the main bearing, and servicing it is a little harder than a PL12D. The ...

Fixing a noisy motor in a NAD 5120 turntable

I was recently given a NAD 5120 by my good pal Stephen Ansell from HiFi Hangar. The Deck was in very good condition, but had a noisy motor I've stripped and serviced a few of these decks as described in my other NAD blog, b ut this time I decided to make a video of stripping the deck and giving the motor a quick service

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your video on youtube reference the nad 5120 motor. Cleaning only hasnt fixed my motor noise, thinking about desoldering the motor and gettting you to assess it. I suspect the thrust bearing is missing, looks like previous owner mangled the casing etc. Can i pop in a ball bearing, i have a supply of rc car bearings of size 2mm approx? Thanks John, Nick.

Sure, I suspect the ball may be missing from the lower thrust bearing. When the motor is open have a look down black plastic fittin in the bottom of the motor. There should be a tiny bearing in there, might need a torch to see it, but its job is to keep the motor pushed up, happy to take a look if you want to remove it (you'll need to desolder and remember which wire went where) and send to me I'm jonathanivesATgmailDOTcom

Hi Jonathan

Thanks for the video.
I have a problem with my NAD 5120 turntable there is a little different than the one you solve in your video.

When I turn on my turntable it starts making a squeaking sound after it has been turned on for 30 seconds or so, the squeaking sound will continue until I turn the turntable off and the sound even becomes louder and louder.

The noise comes from the motor (it took all other elements of the turntable and it still made the sound), do you have any experience with how I could solve the problem and especially solving the problem without replacing the motor.

kind regards
Joseph

Hi Joseph, you are welcome.

I think if the noise comes from the motor, then the process I went through is really the only option. if the motor makes a noise, even if it starts after a while , perhaps heat related) all you can do is dismantle the motor, clean and lubricate.

Q: the aluminium pulley attached to the motor. is it securely fixed ? its not able to rotate on the spindle ? that might make a noise with the belt on

Hi.
Is the grub screw on the top of the pulley?
I've used a jewelers loop and there might be a tiny slotted screw but I'm not sure!
Thanks

Hi, yes - the slotted grub screw is at an angle and is accessible from the top. Sometimes there is enamel paint over it and you may have to pick it out with a pin first. Good luck
